It begins in the Rocky Mountains of northern British Columbia. From there, it flows northeast through northern Alberta. The river eventually joins the Athabasca River to form the Slave River. This creates a huge path of water that reaches the Arctic Ocean. The whole system is the 13th longest river system in the world.

This water travels through many places to reach the sea.

Many different things happen along the river's path. The water flows into large man-made lakes created by dams. For example, the W. A. C. Bennett Dam made Williston Lake. Before the dam was built, the river had rapids and a pass. The river also cuts completely through the Rocky Mountains. It moves through valleys with very rich soil. This soil is great for growing wheat crops.

People have a long history with this river. The Dane-zaa people lived here for a very long time. They called the river Unjegah, which means "large river." Later, fur traders like Peter Pond visited the area in 1785. In 1794, a trading post was built at Fort St. John. This was the first European settlement on the British Columbia mainland. The river even served as a border between different groups.

For a long time, boats moved goods along the water. Many of these were wood-burning steamships.

These ships needed fuel, so they cut wood from the river banks. One famous vessel was named the Grenfell. The river has two parts that boats can sail through. These parts are separated by the Vermilion Chutes. Most early ships used wood to keep their engines running.

Today, the river helps provide energy for many people. Large dams turn the moving water into electricity. The W. A. C. Bennett Dam was finished in 1968. It is the largest dam in British Columbia. It provides over 30% of the power for that province. Engineers also built the Peace Canyon Dam in 1980. A new dam called Site C is being built now. It should be finished by the year 2025.
