From there, the water flows northwest toward the Yellowhead Highway. It then turns south at Giscome Portage to meet the Nechako River. The river passes the city of Prince George on its long journey. Finally, it reaches the Strait of Georgia near Vancouver.

This river moves through many different types of land. It cuts deep into the ground to make the Fraser Canyon. In one famous spot called Hell's Gate, the canyon is very narrow. The walls squeeze the water through a gap only 35 metres wide.

South of the canyon, the river enters the lush Fraser Valley. The land there is flat and green. This area is a large delta where the river meets the sea.

People have known about this river for a very long time. Indigenous groups like the Musqueam and St'at'imc lived along its banks. In 1808, Simon Fraser led an expedition to explore the water. He traced the path almost all the way to the mouth.

Later, many people came to the river during the gold rush of 1858. The river became a vital path for trade and travel. It helped connect the mountains to the coast.

The river is a very powerful force of nature. It carries about 20 million tons of sediment into the ocean every year. This sediment is fine sand and dirt moved by the water. The flow of the river changes with the seasons. In the summer, the water can be ten times larger than in winter.

Huge floods happened in 1894 and 1948. These big events changed the land around the river.

Many living things depend on the Fraser River to survive. It is the largest producer of salmon in all of Canada. Huge white sturgeon also swim in these waters. One sturgeon caught in 2021 was over 100 years old!
