Pawn (chess)

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A pawn is a small piece in chess. Each player starts with eight pawns. They move straight forward one square at a time. On their first move, they can go two squares. Pawns take other pieces by moving sideways. This is called a diagonal move. If a pawn reaches the end, it can change. It can become a queen or a knight. This is called promotion. Pawns are very important for the game.
