Paul Nurse is a famous English geneticist. He studies how living things work at a very tiny level. Geneticists look at genes to see how life is controlled.

His work is very important for understanding health. He helped discover how cells know when to grow and split. This discovery helps us learn about how all life functions. Knowing how cells divide is a huge part of modern science.

Nurse learned a lot by studying a tiny living thing called fission yeast.

He found a specific gene in this yeast named cdc2. This gene acts like a switch for the cell cycle. The cell cycle is the series of steps a cell takes to grow and divide. The cdc2 gene tells the cell to move from one stage to the next. It helps the cell grow its DNA before it splits into two. In 1987, Nurse and his worker Melanie Lee found a similar gene in humans. They named this human gene Cdk1. These genes work by adding or removing small parts called phosphate groups.

Nurse has had a long and busy career in science. He studied at the University of Birmingham and the University of East Anglia. He earned his PhD in 1973 after researching Candida utilis.

He worked at many places like the University of Edinburgh and the University of Sussex. Later, he joined the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in 1984. He also served as the president of Rockefeller University in New York City. In 2011, he became the first leader of the Francis Crick Institute. He also served as the President of the Royal Society from 2010 to 2015.

Many people have given Nurse awards for his great work. In 2001, he won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He shared this prize with Leland Hartwell and Tim Hunt.

He was also made a knight in 1999. This means he is called Sir Paul Nurse. He has received many other honors, like the Copley Medal in 2005. He even won the Albert Einstein World Award of Science in 2013. He has been given over 60 honorary degrees from universities around the world.

Nurse believes that being a scientist requires a special way of thinking. He says scientists should have a passion to find answers. They must also use honesty and stay open-minded.

He thinks it is important to test ideas and look for evidence. Nurse also believes scientists should speak up about important topics. He wants people to use logic instead of just having debates. By asking hard questions, he helps us understand the world better.
