He is a professor of genetics. Genetics is the study of how traits pass from parents to children. He is most famous for inventing genetic fingerprinting. This is a way to find tiny patterns in DNA. DNA is the code inside our bodies. These patterns show how every person is unique. His work helps solve many important problems around the world.

His big discovery happened in a lab in Leicester.

On September 10, 1984, he had a "eureka moment." He was looking at an X-ray film of a DNA experiment. The film showed DNA from a technician's family. He saw that the family members were similar. However, he also saw how they were different. He realized these differences could identify a single person. This way of working is called DNA fingerprinting.

Jeffreys grew up with a very curious mind. He was born in Oxford in 1950. Later, his family moved to Luton.

As a young boy, he loved science. His father gave him a chemistry set. He also had a brass microscope to look at tiny things. He even made his own tools for science. He went to the University of Oxford to study. He graduated with high honors in 1971.

His discoveries changed how police do their work.

In 1985, his method helped a family in an immigration case. It proved a boy was related to his family. In 1986, his work helped solve a crime in Narborough. It identified a killer named Colin Pitchfork. His work also helped an innocent man named Richard Buckland. This man was a suspect but did not do it. Jeffreys's work proved he was not guilty.

Today, his methods are used everywhere.

Scientists now use DNA profiling. This is a more sensitive version of his first test. It uses tiny parts of DNA called minisatellites. This makes the system very accurate for computers. It can even help scientists study animals in the wild. He has won many great awards for his work. In 1994, Queen Elizabeth II made him a knight. He is a very important part of science history.
