Paul Nurse is a famous scientist. He studies how living things work. He is a geneticist. This means he studies genes. Genes are the parts of a cell that control how it grows.

Nurse studied tiny yeast to learn about life. He found a gene called cdc2. This gene tells a cell when to grow and divide. He also found a similar gene in humans. We call this gene Cdk1. This gene helps control the cell cycle. The cell cycle is the set of steps a cell takes to grow and split.

Because of his work, Nurse won the Nobel Prize in 2001. This is a very big prize for science. He has also led many large science groups. He was the President of the Royal Society. He was also the head of the Francis Crick Institute.

Nurse believes scientists must ask many questions. He thinks they should always look for the truth. He wants people to use logic and facts. He believes science helps us understand the world.
