He was known for writing many poems and plays. These stories often showed his deep Catholic faith. He wanted his poetry to show the grand design of creation. He even created his own style of writing called verset claudelien. This was a type of free verse. His sister, Camille Claudel, was a well-known sculptor.

Claudel's writing was special because of how it sounded. He did not use old, strict rules for his poetry. Instead, he used his own rhythm. Many of his plays were set in far-off places. Some took place in medieval France. Others were set in sixteenth-century Spanish South America. His plays often explored deep feelings like human love. They also looked at themes of sacrifice and holiness. One famous play is called L'Annonce faite à Marie. It tells the story of a young woman with leprosy.

His life was also full of travel and work. He joined the French diplomatic service at age 25. This job meant he worked for the French government. He lived in many different countries for many years. He served in New York and Boston in 1893. He lived in China from 1895 to 1909. He also lived in places like Tokyo and Washington, D.C.

Because of his job, he often wrote using a fake name. He did this to follow the rules of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Claudel had many important moments in his long career. In 1909, he began publishing under his own name. This happened after a friend named André Gide praised his work. He was even nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature six times. Later, he was elected to the Académie française in 1946. This is a very prestigious group for great thinkers. He was also called a master of drama. During World War I, he served in Brazil. There, he helped make sure food reached France.

In his later years, Claudel lived a quieter life. He bought a grand house called a château in 1927.

This home was located in a place called Brangues. He spent his winters in the city of Paris. Even during hard times like World War II, he stayed active. He spoke out against unfair laws in France. He also supported the Free French forces. His life was a mix of big travels and deep writing.
