Green Chemistry works by changing how we make things. It uses molecular design to solve environmental problems. Instead of cleaning up pollution, scientists design it away. They create new ways to build chemicals from the start. This process helps make the whole chemical industry safer. It focuses on sustainability, which means using things wisely. This helps ensure the Earth stays healthy for a long time.

Paul's interest in the Earth began when he was young. He grew up in Quincy, Massachusetts. As a child, he saw wetlands near his home destroyed. This event made him want to study environmental issues. He was very active in science at a young age. When he was nine, President Richard Nixon gave him an award. It was for an essay about the Environmental Protection Agency. He later studied chemistry at several different universities.

Paul has held many important jobs in the government. He served as a science advisor for the EPA. President Barack Obama appointed him to help lead research there. He also worked in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. In 1997, he helped start the Green Chemistry Institute. He co-founded several companies like P2 Science in 2011. Now, he is the Director of a center at Yale University. He holds a special chair for chemistry for the environment.

Many people around the world learn from his ideas. He and John Warner wrote a famous book. This book explains the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry. These rules are taught in high schools and colleges. His work has won many big prizes over the years. He received the Volvo Environmental Prize in 2021. He also won the EPA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. Paul is a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox.
