Her grandfather, William Randolph Hearst, ran a huge news business. This business included many newspapers and magazines. Patricia was born on February 20, 1954, in San Francisco. She grew up in a wealthy area called Hillsborough. Later, she went to college at the University of California, Berkeley. She was studying art history when her life changed forever.

In February 1974, a radical group kidnapped her. This group was called the Symbionese Liberation Army, or the SLA. They wanted the government to release their members from jail. They also asked for a lot of food for the poor. Her father gave $2 million in food to help. However, the group did not let her go.

Patricia said she was held in a dark closet for weeks. She said the group leader, Donald DeFreeze, threatened her life. She also said she was hurt by the group while she was held.

After some time, Patricia joined the group. She took a new name, Tania. She even appeared on a tape saying she was part of the SLA. In April 1974, she helped the group rob a bank. This happened at the Hibernia Bank in San Francisco.

A video showed her holding a gun during the robbery. She yelled commands at the people in the bank. This event made her very famous across the country. People were shocked to see a wealthy student acting this way.

Police finally found Patricia in September 1975. She was arrested in an apartment in San Francisco.

At her trial in 1976, her lawyers had a hard job. They argued that the group had brainwashed her. They said she only joined them because she was scared. The prosecution said she chose to join them on her own. The judge did not let the jury hear all the expert ideas about brainwashing. In the end, she was convicted of bank robbery.

Patricia was sentenced to 35 years in prison. Later, a judge reduced her sentence to seven years. President Jimmy Carter helped her leave prison early. Then, President Bill Clinton gave her a pardon. A pardon means her legal troubles were officially over. After her time in prison, she began a new career. She started acting in movies and on television. She even worked with a famous director named John Waters.
