Patrick Geddes was a thinker from Scotland.

He studied plants and how people live. He was a biologist and a town planner. This means he studied life and how to build cities.

Geddes had many big ideas. He believed that people, work, and place are all linked. He used the term "conurbation" to describe groups of cities. He also thought about how nature affects where people live. He made a model called the "Valley Section" to show this.

It showed how land and people work together.

He did not like how cities were built back then. Many people used a "gridiron plan." This plan used straight streets in a simple grid. Geddes thought this could be bad for old neighborhoods. Instead, he used "conservative surgery."

This meant he fixed old buildings instead of tearing them down. He wanted to let in more light and air. He also wanted to keep the heart of the community alive. He worked in many places, like Edinburgh and India. He even started a school in France. He died in 1932.
