Parasympathetic nervous system

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Your body has a way to rest and recover. This is called the parasympathetic nervous system. It is one of three parts of the autonomic nervous system. This system controls things you do without thinking. It helps you when you are calm or resting.

This system helps with many jobs. It helps you digest food and make saliva. It also makes tears and helps you go to the bathroom. It can even make your pupils small when light hits your eyes.

One very important part is the vagus nerve. The name vagus means "wandering." This nerve travels through much of your body. It reaches your heart, lungs, and stomach. It even reaches your liver and kidneys.

The system uses two neurons to send signals. The first neuron is long. It travels from the brain or spine to a small group of cells. These groups are called ganglia. The second neuron is very short. It stays close to the organ it helps. This way, your body can save power and stay steady.
