Scientists often call them the robust australopithecines because of their heavy bone structures. Today, researchers still debate whether Paranthropus is a unique genus. Some scientists argue it should be grouped with Australopithecus. This debate often focuses on whether the group is monophyletic. A monophyletic group includes a common ancestor and all its descendants. Others suggest the group is paraphyletic. This means the species might have evolved similar heavy heads independently through convergent evolution.

The physical structure of Paranthropus was highly specialized for eating. They possessed massively built, tall, and flat skulls. A prominent feature was the sagittal crest. This is a bony ridge running along the midline of the skull. The crest served as an anchor for large temporalis muscles. These muscles provided the power needed for heavy chewing. Their teeth also showed specialized adaptations called post-canine megadontia. This means they had very large molars with thick enamel. Such teeth helped them process abrasive or gritty foods. While their heads were large, their braincase volume was relatively small. It averaged about 410 to 530 cubic centimeters. This is comparable to gracile australopithecines but smaller than the genus Homo.

Different species within the genus had different ways of eating. P. boisei is thought to have been a herbivore. It likely preferred abundant, starchy bulbotubers. The jaw hinge of P. boisei was adapted for grinding food in a side-to-side motion. This movement is efficient for processing abrasive plant matter. In contrast, P. robustus was likely an omnivore. This caused woodlands to retreat and open savannas to expand. Forests became limited to areas near rivers and lakes. Some scientists suggest that Paranthropus and Homo evolved from Australopithecus during this time. They may have occupied different niches in these changing landscapes. While Homo evolved in some areas, Paranthropus likely thrived in riparian environments near water. They lived alongside other species like Homo habilis and Homo erectus.
