geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Papuan Peninsula is a large piece of land. It is in Papua New Guinea. It sits on the island of New Guinea. Some people call it the Bird's Tail Peninsula.

This land is part of a big mountain range. We call this the Owen Stanley Range. It has many high peaks. One peak is Mount Victoria. It is 4,038 meters tall. Another peak is Mount Suckling. It is 3,676 meters tall.

On the south coast, you will find a city. This is Port Moresby. It is the largest city in the country. It is also the capital city.

Many people look at the shape of the island. They say it looks like a bird. The Bird's Tail Peninsula is at the southeast end. The Bird's Head Peninsula is at the northwest end. In World War II, soldiers thought it looked like a turkey. Some people think the island looks like a lizard instead.
