Many big businesses are based here. The city is also known as the Garden City. This is because it has many green spaces. One famous spot is the Lae Botanical Gardens.

The land under Lae is very active. It sits near the edge of big tectonic plates. These are giant pieces of the Earth's crust. Because these plates move, the area has many earthquakes. A tall hill called Mount Lunaman is nearby.
