It is the second-largest city in the country. The city sits on the northern coast of the Huon Gulf. It is located near the delta of the Markham River. Lae serves as a vital industrial hub for the nation. It is also the largest cargo port in Papua New Guinea. The city acts as a gateway to the interior. It marks the beginning of the Highlands Highway. This highway is the primary land transport corridor. It connects the Highlands Region to the coastal areas.

The history of Lae is divided into four distinct phases. The first phase was the mission phase from 1886 to 1920. During this time, German missionaries arrived in the region. Johann Flierl was a pioneer missionary for the Lutheran Church.

He arrived at Lae shortly after reaching Simbang in 1886. The second phase was the gold phase starting in 1926. This era was driven by gold mining near Wau. Cecil John Levien helped organize the Guinea Gold syndicate. In 1927, he arranged for an airstrip to be built. This airstrip helped transport gold from the mines. The third phase was for timber and agriculture until 1965. The final phase is the industrial boom starting in 1965. This boom followed the opening of the Highlands Highway.

Lae has seen many significant historical events. In July 1937, the city made world news. The American aviator Amelia Earhart was last seen flying from the Lae airport. She was on her way back to the United States. During World War II, the town was occupied by the Empire of Japan. This happened on 8 March 1942. Lae became a major Japanese base in New Guinea. The Allies fought many battles to take the area back. The Salamaua–Lae campaign involved many weeks of fierce fighting. The Allies finally took control of the town on 16 September 1943.

The geology of Lae is defined by intense tectonic activity. The city is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire. This area is known for frequent volcanic and seismic activity. Lae sits on the South Bismarck plate. It is caught between the Indo-Australian plate and the Pacific plate. These plates converge in the Ramu-Markham Fault Zone. The plates move at a rate of up to 50 mm per year. This movement creates a significant seismic hazard for the city. Large thrust earthquakes have occurred in the region recently. One happened on 6 April 1999 with a magnitude of 6.4. Another occurred on 22 November 2007 with a magnitude of 6.8.

During the war, the mountain was a strategic point. Both Japanese and Allied forces used the area. It is believed that Japanese soldiers used tunnels inside the hill. Some accounts say the tunnels were used for storage. Others suggest they were used as a hospital. The mountain also features a radio tower at its highest point. This tower has red lights to help with navigation.

Lae has a tropical rainforest climate. It is influenced by the Intertropical Convergence Zone. This means the city experiences an extraordinary amount of rainfall. There are no cyclones because the area is equatorial. The temperatures stay very similar throughout the entire year. This wet weather supports lush vegetation. Because of this, Lae is often called the "Garden City." The Morobe Province produces excellent crops like taro and bananas. The Lae Main Market is considered the best food market in the country.
