He served as the Bishop of Hierapolis. This city is known today as Pamukkale in Turkey. Papias was likely a native of that local area. He lived during a very early time for the faith. Many people call him an Apostolic Father. This means he was a close link to the first followers of Jesus.

He is best known for writing five books. These books were called the Exposition of the Sayings of the Lord. This work focused on the words and teachings of Jesus. Sadly, the full text of these books is now lost. We only have small pieces called fragments. We know about them because other writers quoted him. These writers included men named Irenaeus and Eusebius. They preserved his ideas for us to study today.

Papias had a very special way of learning. He did not want to rely only on written books. He believed a "living voice" was much better. This meant he preferred hearing stories from people directly. He would talk to travelers passing through Hierapolis. He sought out elders who knew the original Twelve Apostles. He spoke with a man named Aristion. He also listened to the daughters of Philip.

Most experts believe Papias wrote his books around 110 AD. Some scholars think it might have been between 100 and 120 AD. He was a companion of a man named Polycarp. Polycarp lived from the year 69 to 155. Papias also heard teachings from John the Elder. This John lived in the nearby city of Ephesus. These connections helped Papias gather his important information.

Today, many thinkers study what Papias wrote about the Gospels. He shared ideas about how the books of Matthew and Mark began. He suggested that Mark wrote his account based on Peter. He also wrote that Matthew produced a work in a Semitic language. Scholars still debate if his reports are perfectly accurate. Some wonder if he misunderstood the stories he heard. Even so, his work helps us see how early traditions were passed down.
