Some cups are special to keep drinks at the right heat. These have an extra layer of air inside. This layer acts like a blanket to hold warmth.

Today, scientists are finding new ways to make cups that are better for the Earth. Some companies now make paper from discarded pineapple leaves. This material is called Pinyapel and it breaks down very quickly. Other new cups use special coatings that make them easier to recycle.

One of the most significant figures in this history is Lawrence Luellen. An inventor from Boston, Luellen was concerned about the spread of germs through shared glasses. In 1907, he developed the Dixie Cup, a line of disposable paper cups. He also created an ice-cooled water-vending machine to dispense them. Luellen and his partner, Hugh Moore, marketed these machines to American railroad companies. By 1909, the Lackawanna Railroad became one of the first American railway companies to use these disposable cups. By 1917, the use of public glasses had largely disappeared from American railway carriages. 
The business behind these cups grew through several iterations. Luellen founded the American Water Supply Company of New England in 1908. He later expanded into New York and New Jersey with Hugh Moore. In 1909, they formed the Public Cup Vendor Company to lease vending machines to railroads. By 1910, they incorporated as the Individual Drinking Cup Company of New York. The product was originally called the "Health Kup." In 1919, it was renamed the Dixie Cup, inspired by a line of dolls from the Dixie Doll Company. 

Manufacturing a paper cup requires specialized materials and precise processes. The base material is called cup board, which is a multi-ply paper made on special machines. This board must have high stiffness and strong wet sizing to maintain its shape. The basis weights for cup board typically range from 170 to 350 g/m2. To ensure hygiene, most manufacturers use virgin, or non-recycled, paper. For hot drinks, some cups include an extra insulating layer of corrugated paper. This layer creates an air gap that helps with heat retention but does not touch the liquid.
Waterproofing has evolved significantly over time. Early hot-drink cups were made waterproof by spinning them at high speeds with small amounts of clay. This caused the clay to coat the walls, but it often made the drink taste like cardboard. For cold drinks, manufacturers moved to spraying the paper with wax to prevent condensation from making the cup unstable. Today, most cups use polyethylene (PE), a thin plastic coating. This coating waterproofs the board and helps weld the seams together. New innovations are also emerging, such as Pinyapel, a material made from discarded pineapple leaves. 
Printing technology has also advanced to allow for complex designs. Early cups were printed using rubber blocks on cylinders, which made it difficult to align different colors. Modern manufacturers often use flexography, a method ideal for long production runs of over a million cups. While older processes used solvent-based inks, many companies now use water-based or soya-based inks. These newer inks prevent the cup from smelling like chemicals, which is especially important for hot beverages. For very small orders, companies can use offset printing or direct-printing methods to provide customized designs.
