geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Panaji is the capital city of the Indian state of Goa. It also serves as the headquarters for the North Goa district. The city is located on the banks of the Mandovi river estuary. This location is within the Tiswadi sub-district. Panaji is the largest urban agglomeration in Goa. It is larger than other major areas like Margão and Mormugão. The city is part of a special project called the Smart Cities Mission. This mission aims to develop one hundred Indian cities into modern, smart urban centers.

The physical layout of Panaji is very organized. The city was built using a planned grid system. This means the streets are laid out in a structured way. The city features stepped streets and terraced hills. Many concrete buildings have balconies and red-tiled roofs. You can walk along a riverside promenade to enjoy the water. Avenues in the city are lined with trees like acacia and gulmohar.

The history of Panaji is tied to the Portuguese. In the 17th century, the Portuguese moved their capital from Velha Goa to this area. They originally named the city Nova Goa, which means "New Goa." The city was officially elevated from a town to a city on 22 March 1843. Panaji was annexed by India in 1961. Following this, it became the capital of the Union Territory of Goa, Daman and Diu. In 1987, it became a state capital when Goa achieved statehood.

Ancient records suggest the area has been important for a long time. In 1059 CE, copper-plates mentioned a name similar to Panjim. This was during the rule of the Kadamba king Jayakesi I. A stone inscription from 1054 CE also mentions the name Panjanakhani. This name is linked to the king's title, Padavalendra. This title means "lord of the western ocean" in the Kannada language. The modern name Panaji likely comes from the Sanskrit words panjani and khali. These words mean a boat and a small creek.

Panaji has a diverse population and a specific climate. According to the 2011 census, the population was 114,405 people. The literacy rate is quite high at 90.9%. Most residents follow Hinduism, which is practiced by 64.08% of the population. Christianity is practiced by 26.51%, and Islam by 8.84%. The climate is a tropical monsoon type. This means summers are hot and winters are equable. From June to October, the city experiences heavy rainfall and gusty winds.
