It is made of many pipes sitting side by side. These pipes have different lengths to make different notes. People often use bamboo or cane to make them. Some makers use wood, metal, or even clay. This instrument is special because it is used by many cultures.

Playing the instrument is a skill. You blow air horizontally across the open top of a pipe. This makes the air vibrate inside the tube. The length of the tube decides the pitch of the note. Long pipes create low sounds. Short pipes create high sounds.

Musicians can also use vibrato to change the sound. They might move their hands or use their breath. This makes the music feel alive and moving.

There is a very old story about this instrument. It is named after Pan, a Greek god of nature. In Greek myths, a forest nymph named Syrinx tried to escape him. She turned into a reed to hide. Pan cut the reeds and tied them together.

He made a musical instrument from them. The Greeks called it the Syrinx to honor her. Later, the Romans played it at big festivals and banquets.

Many different types of pan flutes exist around the world. In the Andes, people play the siku. In Bolivia, they call them jula-jula or julu-julu.

In Romania, the pipes are often glued in a curved shape. Makers use beeswax to tune these Romanian pipes. In South America, players might use small pebbles or corn kernels to tune the pitch. In Zimbabwe, the ngororombe is a common instrument. In Laos and Thailand, the wot is used in folk music.

Today, the pan flute is still very popular. You can hear it in many different kinds of music. Musicians like Gheorghe Zamfir made the curved style famous.

In America, the quills were used in blues music. Even modern designers use 3D printing to make new versions. This helps people learn to play more easily. The pan flute connects the ancient past to our world today.
