Out of Africa

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Karen Blixen was a writer from Denmark. She wrote a famous book called Out of Africa. The book tells stories about her life in Kenya.

She lived there for eighteen years. She ran a large coffee farm near the Ngong Hills. The farm was a busy place. Many people worked there, including the Kikuyu tribespeople. Blixen felt a deep bond with her workers. She saw them as good friends.

The book also describes the wild land. She wrote about animals like lions, zebras, and giraffes. Life on the farm followed the dry and rainy seasons. It felt like a different world.

However, life was not always easy. The coffee farm struggled with bad weather and pests. A swarm of grasshoppers even attacked the crops. Later, the farm ran out of money. Blixen had to sell it and go home. She wrote her memoir to remember that lost time. The book is a way to honor the people and the land she loved. It is a sad but beautiful story about a life lived in nature.
