Otto Neurath was a thinker from Austria who studied many different subjects. He was a philosopher of science and a sociologist. He also worked as a political economist to understand how money and goods work.

Neurath was born in Vienna on December 10, 1882. His father, Wilhelm Neurath, was a well-known Jewish political economist. His mother was a Protestant, and Otto later became a Protestant himself. He studied math and physics at the University of Vienna in 1902. Later, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Berlin in 1906.

One of Neurath's most famous ideas was a new way to show data. He worked with an illustrator named Gerd Arntz and Marie Reidemeister. They created a system of small icons to represent numbers and facts. He called this the International System of Typographic Picture Education, or Isotype.

Neurath believed that "words divide, pictures unite." He thought these pictures could help people who spoke different languages understand each other. This was a forerunner to the colorful infographics we see today. He even promoted Isotype as an international picture language.

In Vienna, Neurath helped build special places to share knowledge. In 1923, he founded a museum for housing and city planning called the Siedlungsmuseum. He later renamed it the Museum of Society and Economy in 1925.

This museum was located in important buildings like the People's Hall at the Vienna City Hall. He worked with many leaders, including the mayor Karl Seitz and city councillor Julius Tandler. Neurath wanted to make sure everyone could understand the information in the museum. He used his graphic design skills to make the exhibits clear for all visitors.

Neurath was also a very important part of a group called the Vienna Circle. He was a main author of their manifesto and a leader in the Unity of Science movement.

He had many big ideas about how science works. He believed science should use the language of math and physics to stay objective. He also thought that truth comes from how well our ideas fit together. He used a famous idea about a boat being repaired while it is already at sea. This helped explain how we build our knowledge bit by bit.

His later years were marked by many difficult changes. Because of politics and war, he had to leave his home in Austria in 1934.

He first moved to the Netherlands to continue his work. Later, he and his wife Marie fled to Britain in an open boat. They arrived in Britain after the Luftwaffe bombed Rotterdam. In Oxford, they started the Isotype Institute to keep his work alive. Neurath died in December 1945 after a sudden stroke. His wife, Marie, spent many years finishing his projects and writing books for children.
