Otto Carius was a German tank commander during World War II. He was a leader of large, armored vehicles called tanks. Some people call him a "panzer ace." This means he was very skilled at fighting with tanks. Different sources give different numbers for his success. Some say he destroyed more than 150 enemy tanks. However, Carius said he had 100 kills or even fewer.

He believed he should only count kills made by the gunner. This shows how he thought about his job and his team.

His journey in the military was not easy at first. He finished school in 1940. He tried to join the army twice. The army rejected him both times. They said he was too underweight for service. He did not give up and eventually joined the infantry. Later, he volunteered to work with tanks. His father actually called tanks "metal deathtraps."

This shows that even his family was worried about the danger.

Carius fought in many different places during the war. In 1943, he served in the 502nd Heavy Panzer Battalion. He fought on the Eastern Front in northern areas. In late 1943, his gunner even shot down a Soviet plane. This plane was an IL-2 attacking his tank. In 1945, he moved to the Western Front. He led a company of Jagdtigers in the 512th Heavy Anti-tank Battalion.

These were very large and heavy fighting vehicles.

Near the end of the war, things became very difficult. On March 8, 1945, his unit went to the front near Siegburg. They tried to defend the Rhine river against American forces. They had limited success in this fight. Eventually, his unit was trapped in the Ruhr Pocket. To stop the enemy from taking his tanks, Carius ordered them destroyed. He surrendered to the US Army on May 7, 1945.

He was released from captivity just two weeks later.

After the war ended, Carius started a new life. He went to Heidelberg University to study pharmacology. This is the science of making medicines. He opened his own pharmacy and named it "Tiger Apotheke." This name was a tribute to the Tiger tank. He also wrote a book about his life called "Tigers in the Mud." This book came out in 1960 and was even made into a manga.

He worked at his shop until he retired in 2011. He died in 2015 at the age of 92.
