Otto Carius was a German tank leader. He lived during World War II. At first, the army said no to him. They said he was too thin. He did not stop trying. He joined the army and led large tanks.

He fought on two sides of Europe. He fought in the East in 1943. He fought in the West in 1945. Some people say he destroyed 150 enemy tanks. Otto said he had 100 or fewer kills. He said this because he only counted kills made by the gunner. One time, his gunner shot down a plane. This happened in late 1943.

At the end of the war, Otto had to surrender. He gave his tanks to the US Army. After the war, Otto went to school. He studied how to make medicine. He opened a pharmacy. He named it the Tiger Apotheke. This was a tribute to the Tiger tank. He also wrote a book. It was called Tigers in the Mud. He ran his shop until he retired in 2011. He died in 2015.
