Because it is so hard, it is difficult to shape. People often make alloys to use it. An alloy is a mix of different metals. Makers mix osmium with platinum or iridium. They use these mixes for fountain pen tips. They also use them for electrical contacts. These parts need to be very tough.

Osmium is quite rare in the Earth's crust. It is often found near nickel and copper.

One of its forms is osmium tetroxide. This is a solid that can turn into a gas easily. It has a very strong and bad smell. This is why the name osmium comes from a Greek word for smell. Scientists found this metal in 1803. Smithson Tennant was one of the people who identified it.
