Oruro is a large city in Bolivia.

It sits in a high place called the Altiplano. The city is about halfway between La Paz and Sucre. It is the fifth-largest city in the country. About 264,683 people lived there in 2012.

Many people in Oruro work in mines. They dig for metals like tin, silver, copper, and tungsten. Because of these mines, the city's size changes. When mining is good, the city grows. When mining slows down, the city changes too.

Long ago, different groups lived on this land. The Uru and Aymara people lived here first. Later, the Inca people came to the region. In 1606, Spanish leaders founded the city. They named it Real Villa de San Felipe de Austria. They built it in a grid pattern like towns in Europe.
