The Orontes is a long and famous river in West Asia.

It begins in Lebanon near the town of Labweh. The water flows north through the country of Syria. Eventually, it enters Turkey and meets the Mediterranean Sea near Samandağ. Most rivers in this region flow toward the south. However, the Orontes flows north, which is quite different. Because of this, its Arabic name can mean "insubordinate."

The river follows a very interesting path through the land. It starts near the Beqaa Valley between two mountain ranges. The water falls through a deep gorge to leave the valley. Later, it flows into the Lake of Homs in Syria. This is an artificial lake made by a dam. The river then passes through the Ghab plain. It moves past the ancient city of Apamea. Finally, it turns west into the Amik Valley.

Many people have lived near this river for a long time. Great cities like Homs and Hama sit along its banks. The ancient city of Antioch was once a major capital. It sat right on the Orontes for many years. In the past, the river was a place for big battles. One famous fight was the Battle of Kadesh in the 13th century BCE. Many kings fought to control this important water source.

History tells us many different names for this water. The ancient Assyrians called it Arantu. The Egyptians called it Araunti. Some say the name comes from a word for "lioness." Other stories say it was named after a Greek leader. A geographer named Strabo said it was once called Typhon. He believed the river formed where a dragon fell from the sky. Later, a man named Orontes built a bridge there. This might be how it got its current name.

Today, the river is a vital part of life for many. People rely on its water for their farms and homes. However, the river can be very unpredictable. In 2025, a lack of rain caused parts of the river to dry up. This was a hard time for fish and farmers. Just one year later, in 2026, heavy rain caused big floods. These floods hit places like the Idlib countryside. The river continues to be a changing part of the world.
