Ornithischia is a huge and diverse group of dinosaurs. Most of them were herbivores, which means they ate plants. They are known as "bird-hipped" dinosaurs because of their pelvic structure. This shape is similar to how birds have hips.

Even though they share this hip shape, birds are actually only distantly related to them. This group of dinosaurs lived on every continent in the world. They lived in many different habitats and came in many sizes.

Early ornithischians were quite small, usually 1 to 2 meters long. These early dinosaurs were bipedal, meaning they walked on two legs. Their front limbs were much shorter than their back limbs. They used a very long tail to act as a counterbalance. This helped them balance their weight as they moved.

Their long legs suggest they were built to be fast runners. Their skeletons were also built quite lightly. This helped them stay quick on their feet.

Scientists have found many different kinds of these dinosaurs over time. Some groups are called ceratopsians, or "horn-faced" dinosaurs.

Some members may have even been omnivores that ate both plants and meat.

Many ornithischians had very interesting skin. Most were covered in small, non-overlapping scales.

Some had large feature scales mixed in with the small ones. Some dinosaurs, like the Psittacosaurus, had long bristles on their tails.

Other species like Tianyulong and Kulindadromeus had hair-like filaments. Scientists are still debating if these filaments were primitive feathers. Some dinosaurs also had hard parts like beaks or horns. These were made of keratin, just like a bird's beak.

These dinosaurs lived in interesting ways that we can still study. Many ornithischians lived in large herds. Often, the young dinosaurs lived in their own flocks.

This name comes from the Greek words for "bird" and "hip." However, birds are actually theropod dinosaurs. This means ornithischians are only distantly related to modern birds. Despite this, they represent one of the most successful groups of land animals in history. They lived on every continent and occupied many different habitats.

The defining characteristic of an ornithischian is its opisthopubic pelvis. In this arrangement, the pubis bone points backward, parallel to the ischium. This differs from the propubic pelvis of saurischian dinosaurs, where the pubis points toward the head. This specific hip shape resulted in a four-pronged pelvic structure. Interestingly, this opisthopubic condition evolved independently at least three times in different dinosaur groups. It appeared in ornithischians, birds, and the therizinosauroids. This shows how different lineages can develop similar physical solutions for their body plans.

Early ornithischians were relatively small, averaging only 1 to 2 meters in length. These ancestors were bipedal, meaning they walked on two legs. Their forelimbs were much shorter than their hindlimbs. Their anatomy suggests they were built for speed. For example, the tibia was considerably longer than the femur. They also possessed long tails that acted as a counterbalance. This helped them manage their center of gravity while running.

Their skulls were lightly built and featured large, lateral eyes. This allowed them to see a wide area around them.

As time passed, ornithischians grew into many specialized groups. The Thyreophora were the armored dinosaurs, including stegosaurs and ankylosaurs.

Stegosaurs often had long, low skulls with deep jaws. In contrast, ankylosaurs developed very robust, immobile skulls. These ankylosaur skulls had closed openings called fenestrae and featured bony armor. They even had deeply inset teeth that created large cheeks.

Another major group was the ornithopods, which included the hadrosaurids. Hadrosaurids developed complex dental batteries where teeth were continuously replaced. Many also grew prominent cranial crests on their heads.

Other famous groups include the pachycephalosaurs and the ceratopsians. Pachycephalosaurs are known for their thickened skull bones. These bones often formed large, round domes on top of their heads.

Ceratopsians, or "horn-faced" dinosaurs, were the sister group to pachycephalosaurs. They evolved a specialized bone called a rostral bone to form a beak. Their skulls often featured large bony frills at the back. Some ceratopsids, like Torosaurus and Pentaceratops, had massive skulls. These reached lengths of over 2 meters, making them some of the largest terrestrial vertebrates ever.

The skin and external coverings of ornithischians were also very varied. Most species were covered in a mosaic of small, non-overlapping basement scales.

Some had larger feature scales interspersed among the smaller ones. Some specimens show evidence of filaments or bristles. For instance, Psittacosaurus had long bristles along its tail.
