He was known as a giant hunter of great strength. Many different stories describe his life and his many adventures. Some people believe he was placed among the stars as a constellation. This means he became a group of stars in the night sky. People in the region of Boeotia once honored him as a hero. One old story even says he helped shape the Strait of Sicily.

There are several different ideas about how Orion was born.

The most common story says he was the son of Poseidon. Because of this, Orion could walk on top of the water. Another version involves a man named Hyrieus from Tanagra. The gods Zeus, Hermes, and Poseidon visited him once. They asked for a favor and a son in return. Ten months later, Hyrieus found a baby buried in the earth.

Orion's life included many travels to different lands. He visited the islands of Chios and Lemnos.

During his time on Chios, he had a difficult encounter with King Oenopion. This led to Orion losing his sight. To find his vision again, he had to travel east. Some stories say he was helped by the god Hephaestus. He may have even been healed by the sun.

Many tales explain how the great hunter eventually died.

One version says a giant scorpion was sent to fight him. This happened after Orion threatened to kill every animal on Earth. Other stories say the goddess Artemis was responsible for his death. In one account, Apollo challenged Artemis to hit a target in the ocean. She did not realize she was shooting Orion. This story is told in the writings of Hyginus.

We see Orion's name in the oldest Greek books.

Homer mentions him in the Iliad and the Odyssey. In these poems, he is seen as a hunter or a constellation. The star Sirius is sometimes called his dog. Hesiod also wrote about him as a constellation in the sky. People used his rising and setting to help track the year. He remains one of the most famous characters in all of mythology.
