His life as a writer has been very busy and important. He began writing regularly in 1974. His first novel was called *Darkness and Light*. It won a contest in 1979. Another book, *Mr. Cevdet and His Sons*, won a prize in 1983. His book *The New Life* was a huge success in Turkey. It became the fastest-selling book in the history of his country. Writing can sometimes be a hard job for him. Pamuk often writes about serious things like history and politics. This has sometimes caused problems for him in his home country. In 2011, a court ordered him to pay money because of a statement he made. He also faced trouble for writing about the rights of Kurdish people. Even when things were difficult, he kept working. He once said he worked twelve hours a day to finish a book. He believed it was important to focus on the beauty of his work.

Pamuk uses his stories to connect people together. He believes that humans have a special ability to understand others. He calls this the ability to identify with "the other." This means trying to see the world through someone else's eyes. He even built a real building called the Museum of Innocence. He filled the museum with everyday objects from his stories.
