She was an Aboriginal woman. She was also a writer and a teacher.

Oodgeroo was born in 1920. She grew up on North Stradbroke Island. She was the first Aboriginal woman to publish a book of poems. Her first book was called "We Are Going." It was very popular. She used her poems to speak about her people. She wanted everyone to know about Aboriginal rights.

Oodgeroo worked hard to change laws. She wanted Aboriginal people to be full citizens. She met with leaders to talk about fairness. In 1987, she gave back a special award. She did this to show she was unhappy with how the government treated her people.

She also loved to teach. She started a center on North Stradbroke Island. She taught many children about nature. She taught them about her culture, too. She said she was "colour blind." This meant she wanted to teach all children.

Many people honor her today. Schools and prizes carry her name. She was a brave voice for her people.
