She was born in 1848. Louisa grew up in a large family. She left school when she was thirteen. Later, she married a sailor named Niels Larsen. She had four children. Her oldest son was Henry Lawson. He became a famous poet.

Louisa worked hard to make money. She ran boarding houses in Sydney. She used her savings to start a newspaper. In 1888, she started a journal called The Dawn. This was the first paper made only by women. It was sent to many places. The Dawn talked about women's rights. It spoke about women's education and the right to vote.

Louisa also helped the suffrage movement. This was a group that fought for women to vote. She let a group use her office for free. In 1902, women in New South Wales won the right to vote. People called Louisa "The Mother of Suffrage."

Many things honor her today. Australia released a stamp with her face on it. There are also parks and buildings named after her.
