It belongs to a plant group called Allium. This group includes many tasty things like garlic, leeks, and chives. The common onion is known by its scientific name, Allium cepa. Some types, like shallots, can even grow more than one bulb at a time.

People use onions in many ways to make food taste better.

An onion plant grows in a very specific way. It starts with hollow, bluish-green leaves that grow in a fan shape. As the plant grows, it begins to store food in the bulb at its base. This bulb is actually a shortened, compressed stem hidden underground. The bulb starts to swell when the days reach a certain length. In the autumn, the leaves die down and the outer layers become dry and brittle.

Humans have been growing onions for at least 7,000 years.

We are not exactly sure where they first began. Some say they came from West or Central Asia. Ancient people in Mesopotamia even wrote onion recipes on clay tablets. These tablets date back to around 2000 BC. In ancient Egypt, people thought the onion's rings were symbols of eternal life. They even used them in burials for leaders like Ramesses IV.

There are many different kinds of onions to choose from. Yellow or brown onions are often very sweet when cooked.

Red onions have a sharp and pungent flavor. They are great to eat raw in salads or on a grill. White onions are much milder than the others. Some onions are grown to be very small, like pearl or pickler onions. Most onions are about 89% water. They also contain carbohydrates and a little bit of protein.

Onions can do more than just add flavor to a meal. They are even used in science classrooms. Because onion cells are quite large, they are easy to see under a microscope.

This helps students learn how living things are built. You might also notice that chopping an onion makes you cry. This happens because the plant releases a gas when it is cut. This gas hits the nerves in your eyes and causes tears. It is just the plant's way of defending itself.
