A leek is a long vegetable used in many meals. It is a type of plant called Allium ampeloprasum. This plant belongs to a large family of living things. This group includes onions, garlic, shallots, and chives. Some people call the edible part a stem or a stalk. It is actually a bundle of leaf sheaths.

Growing leeks is a careful way of working. Farmers start by planting seeds in special seed-beds. They wait about 12 weeks for the plants to grow. At this time, the leeks are as thick as a pencil. Then, workers move them into a field with loose soil. The plants like a temperature of around 15 degrees Celsius. They can stay in the field for a long harvest. This harvest can last for up to 6 months.

Leeks have a very long history in our world. People in ancient Egypt ate them a long time ago. We know this from old wall carvings and drawings. They were also grown in Mesopotamia in the second millennium BCE. In ancient Rome, people thought leeks were better than garlic. Even Emperor Nero loved them very much. He ate them in soup or oil to help his voice.

There are many ways to cook this vegetable. You can boil leeks to make them soft and mild. In France, people boil them and call them "poor man's asparagus." You can also fry them to make them crunchy. In Turkey, cooks boil thick slices and fill them with rice and herbs. Some people even make leek meatballs or patties. They are a great part of many different foods.

Leeks are also a very important symbol in Wales. People in Wales wear a leek on St. David's Day. One old story says soldiers wore them on helmets in battle. This happened in a field full of leeks. You can even see leeks on British one pound coins. They were even on the coronation gown of Queen Elizabeth II. They are a proud sign of Welsh culture.
