Omeros is a very long poem.

A writer named Derek Walcott wrote it. He was from Saint Lucia. Many people call this his best work. He won a Nobel Prize for his writing.

The poem has seven books. It also has sixty-four chapters. The stories take place mostly on the island of Saint Lucia. Some parts happen in other places, like London or Rome. The poem also tells stories from the past. One part tells of a sea battle from 1782. Another part tells of an activist from the 1800s.

There are many characters in the poem. Two fishermen named Achille and Hector are very important. There is also a housemaid named Helen. Walcott uses the name Helen for the island, too. The poem does not have just one hero. Instead, the stories jump between many different people.

Walcott used a special way to write the lines. Most lines have three parts. He even painted the cover of the book! It shows his characters in a boat on the sea.

People can even see the poem performed as a play on stage.
