Olympic weightlifting is a sport of incredible strength and power.

Athletes compete to lift a heavy barbell from the ground to over their heads. They want to lift the heaviest weight possible to win. This sport tests more than just pure strength. It also tests explosive power and how well a person can move. This is called mobility, or the ability to move through a wide range of motion. Because the lifts are so fast, athletes must be very quick and precise.

There are two main ways to perform these lifts. The first is called the snatch. In a snatch, the lifter uses a wide grip on the bar. They pull the barbell up and overhead in one single, fluid motion. This move requires very precise balance to stay steady.

The second way is the clean and jerk. This is a combination lift done in two stages. First, the lifter pulls the bar to their shoulders in the clean. Then, they push the bar from their shoulders to overhead in the jerk.

Weightlifting has a very long history. People have recorded contests to see who is strongest since ancient times. These records come from places like Egypt, China, India, and Ancient Greece. The first official World Weightlifting Championships were held in London in 1891. Edward Lawrence Levy became the very first world champion there. The sport was part of the first Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. Back then, people even had competitions for lifting with only one hand.

Weightlifting has been in every Summer Olympic Games since 1920. The sport uses different weight classes to keep things fair. These classes are based on how much a person weighs. For example, the current men's classes include weights like 61 kg and 73 kg. The women's classes include weights like 49 kg and 59 kg. In a competition, each lifter gets three attempts for each lift. Judges watch closely to see if a lift is successful. They use white lights for a good lift and red lights for a failed one.

Many people use these moves to train for other sports. Elite athletes use parts of these lifts to build functional strength. This helps them move better in many different activities. The sport is managed globally by the International Weightlifting Federation. They run the World Weightlifting Championships every single year. Even at local contests, people can win titles like "Best Lifter." This title uses a special math formula called the Sinclair coefficient. It helps compare lifters of different sizes and genders fairly.
