The Olympic Peninsula is a large piece of land in Western Washington.

It sits across the water from Seattle. The Pacific Ocean is to the west. To the north lies the Strait of Juan de Fuca. To the east is the Hood Canal.

The peninsula contains many counties like Clallam and Jefferson. It also includes parts of Grays Harbor and Mason Counties. You can find Cape Alava and Cape Flattery here. These are the westernmost and northwesternmost points in the contiguous United States.

Tall mountains sit in the middle of the land. This is the Olympic mountain range. It is the second largest range in Washington State. The highest peak is Mt. Olympus.

The weather changes depending on where you stand. Much of the land has an oceanic climate. This means it stays fairly mild. Most populated areas have a warm-summer Mediterranean climate instead. The mountains create a rain shadow effect. This means the west is very wet, but the northeast is much drier.

The wet western side has beautiful temperate rain forests. These include the Hoh, Queets, and Quinault rain forests. Many rivers flow through these green spaces. These rivers are important for salmon. Some major rivers are the Humptulips, Quinault, and Queets.

The Queets River is one of these vital paths. Other rivers include the Bogachiel, Sol Duc, and Elwha. There are also many natural lakes. You can visit Lake Crescent, Lake Ozette, or Lake Sutherland. Some lakes, like Lake Cushman, were made by dams.

People have been exploring this land for a long time. For a while, it was one of the last unexplored places in the United States. Between 1898 and 1900, Arthur Dodwell and Theodore Rixon mapped the area. They mapped the shape of the land and the timber resources. Today, people work to protect the land. A group called the Wild Olympics campaign wants to save more wilderness. They also want to protect salmon streams under the Wild and Scenic River Act.

There are many places to visit on the peninsula. It has many state and national parks. Olympic National Park is a very famous one. There is also the Olympic National Forest. Within the forest, there are five wilderness areas like The Brothers and Wonder Mountain. You can find towns like Port Angeles and Sequim. Some towns are larger, with at least 10,000 people. Others are smaller, like Forks or Neah Bay. There is even a marine sanctuary just off the coast.
