He was also the personal doctor for King Christian IV. Worm came from a family with important roles in Aarhus. His father, Willum Worm, was a mayor there. His grandfather, Johan Worm, was a magistrate. Worm became a wealthy man through an inheritance from his father.

Ole was a man who loved to learn. He studied at the University of Marburg in 1605. Later, he earned a medical degree from the University of Basel in 1611. In 1617, he received a master of arts degree in Copenhagen. He married Dorothea Fincke, who was the daughter of a mathematician. This marriage connected him to many important scientists. Worm spent most of his life teaching and studying in the city of Copenhagen. He even stayed to help sick people during a plague. Sadly, he died from that illness in 1654.

He held a professorship at the University of Copenhagen. In this role, he taught several subjects including Greek, Latin, physics, and medicine. His work helped bridge the gap between old ways of thinking and modern scientific methods.

Worm was born into a family with important social roles in Aarhus. His father, Willum Worm, served as the mayor of that city. His grandfather, Johan Worm, was a magistrate in Aarhus. Worm became a wealthy man through an inheritance from his father. He married Dorothea Fincke, whose father was Thomas Fincke. Thomas Fincke was a mathematician and physicist who invented the terms "tangent" and "secant." Through this marriage, Worm connected with the powerful Bartholin family. This family of scientists and theologians dominated the University of Copenhagen for many years.

His education was a lifelong journey of study. After attending grammar school in Aarhus, he studied theology at the University of Marburg in 1605. He earned a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Basel in 1611. Later, in 1617, he received a master of arts degree from the University of Copenhagen. Most of his career was spent teaching in Copenhagen. He even served as the personal physician to King Christian IV of Denmark. During an epidemic of the bubonic plague, Worm stayed in the city to care for the sick. This decision led to his death from the plague in 1654.

Worm used observation to solve many scientific mysteries. In 1638, he used empirical evidence to show that unicorns did not exist. He discovered that the horns people thought were from unicorns actually came from narwhals. He even tested if narwhal horns had anti-poison properties. He did this by giving ground-up narwhal horn to pets that had been poisoned. He reported that the pets recovered from the poisoning. He also proved that lemmings were rodents. This disproved the idea that lemmings were spontaneously generated from the air. Additionally, he provided the first detailed drawing of a bird-of-paradise. This drawing proved these birds had feet like regular birds, despite popular speculation.

As a collector, Worm created the Museum Wormianum in Copenhagen. This was a "cabinet of curiosities" used for pedagogy, or teaching. His collection included minerals, plants, animals, and man-made objects. He also collected fossils and artifacts from the New World. After his death in 1654, a catalog of the museum was published. This catalog was divided into four distinct books. The first three books described minerals, plants, and animals. The fourth book focused on archaeological and ethnographic items. This collection allowed him to show his students the physical reality of the natural world.

Worm was also a dedicated researcher of ancient Scandinavian culture. He collected and transcribed texts written in runic script. He published "Danish Chronology" in 1626 to share his research on runic lore. In 1636, he published "Runes: the oldest Danish literature," which was a compilation of these texts. His 1643 book, "Danish Monuments," was the first written study of runestones. This book is a vital historical source. It contains depictions of many runestones and inscriptions that are now lost to time.

His scientific legacy remains visible in several ways today. In the field of medicine, small bones that fill gaps in the cranial sutures are called Wormian bones. These are named in his honor.
