Ole Kirk Christiansen was a carpenter from Denmark. He started a small woodworking shop. At first, he made things like ladders. He also made ironing boards. In 1932, business was hard. People did not have much money. Ole decided to make wooden toys instead. He made trucks and pull-along animals. He named his company Lego. This name comes from two Danish words. They mean "play well."

Ole worked very hard to make his toys. He used birch wood. He dried the wood for a long time. Then he sanded and painted them. In 1947, Ole bought a new machine. This machine used plastic. It was a plastic moulding injection machine. This machine helped make plastic toys.

Later, the company made a special brick. They used a material called ABS. This plastic helped the bricks stay together. This grip is called clutch power. Ole died in 1958. His son, Godtfred, took over the company. Today, the Lego Group is famous all over the world.
