It is the biggest right tributary of the Volga River. A tributary is a smaller river that flows into a larger one. The Oka flows through many different regions. These include Oryol, Tula, Kaluga, Moscow, Ryazan, Vladimir, and Nizhny Novgorod. Much of the river is navigable, which means boats can travel on it. This travel is possible as far upstream as the town of Kaluga.

For a long time, the Oka was a vital path for travel.

Before railways and canals were built, it connected Moscow to the Volga. The river winds and meanders, so travel was not always fast. In 1703, it took Cornelis de Bruijn about ten days to sail to Nizhny Novgorod. Going upstream was even harder for the boats. People called burlaks had to pull the boats along the water.

Many different groups of people have lived along the Oka. The river was the home of the Vyatichi tribe. By the 5th century, many Slavic tribes lived in the area. The Galindians and Turkic tribes also lived near the river. Even Vikings from Scandinavia used the Oka-Volga route.

The river also helped protect lands from raids. It served as a line of defense for the Grand Duchy of Moscow. Later, a chain of forts called the Zasechnaya cherta was built nearby.

History is found in many places along the river banks. In 1221, Grand Duke Yuri II of Vladimir founded Nizhny Novgorod. He did this to protect where the Oka meets the Volga. The Qasim Khanate occupied the middle part of the river in the 1400s and 1500s. You can still see many old sites today. There are medieval monasteries in Murom and mosques in Kasimov. You can also find fortified kremlins in Kolomna and Serpukhov.

Nature and culture also make the Oka a special place. The Prioksko-Terrasny Biosphere Reserve is on the left bank near Pushchino. This reserve is a nursery for breeding wisent. The river even inspired a famous military field song. This song was written by Leon Pasternak in 1943. It compares the Oka to the Vistula river in Poland. The river remains a huge part of the Russian landscape.
