He ruled a kingdom in Anglo-Saxon England from 757 until 796. Before he became king, there was a civil war. This happened after King Æthelbald was killed. Offa fought a man named Beornred to win the throne. He was the son of Thingfrith and a descendant of Eowa.

Offa worked hard to grow his power. At first, he took control of local groups like the Hwicce. He also took control of the Magonsæte people. By 771, he had power over the land of Sussex. In the 780s, he ruled most of southern England. He made an alliance with Beorhtric of Wessex. To seal this deal, Offa's daughter Eadburh married Beorhtric.

Offa was a Christian king, but he sometimes fought with the Church. He had a big disagreement with Jænberht, the Archbishop of Canterbury. Offa wanted more control over religious areas. He asked Pope Adrian I to split the Canterbury area in two. This created a new area called the archdiocese of Lichfield. This change helped Offa's son, Ecgfrith, become king in 787.

Some coins even show his wife, Cynethryth. She is the only Anglo-Saxon queen ever shown on a coin.

He also had three gold coins. One was a copy of a coin from a far-off place. These gold coins might have been used as special gifts.

Offa was a very big leader for his time. Some people call him the most imposing king before Alfred the Great. He even built a huge wall called Offa's Dyke.

He did not rule the north, but he tried to connect with them. He gave his daughter Ælfflæd to the Northumbrian king Æthelred I. Historians study his life to understand how England changed. His son Ecgfrith became king after Offa died in 796.
