The Huchiun people, who were part of the Ohlone group, lived here for thousands of years. They lived near places like Lake Merritt and Temescal Creek. Later, Spanish settlers arrived in the late 18th century. The land was part of a large ranch called Rancho San Antonio. This ranch was given to Luis María Peralta in 1820. The area was called "Encinal" in Spanish, which means "oak grove."
