Most people in Hawaii live in or near the Honolulu area. Some people call Oʻahu "The Gathering Place." This nickname was suggested by an author named Thomas Thrum in 1922.

The island was made by volcanoes a long time ago. It started to grow from the sea floor 4 million years ago. Today, the island has two old mountain ranges. These are called the Waiʻanae and Koʻolau Ranges. There is a wide valley between these two ranges. The highest point is a peak called Kaʻala. It rises 4,003 feet above the sea. Oʻahu is also known for having a lot of rain. One ranch reported rain for 247 straight days in the 1990s.

Humans first arrived on Oʻahu a long time ago. Some studies say explorers arrived as early as the 3rd century. Other studies suggest they arrived between 900 and 1200 A.D. The first great king was a lawmaker named Maʻilikūkahi. Later, Captain James Cook saw the island in 1778. This was the first time non-Polynesian people saw the islands. A man named Captain Charles Clerke visited Waimea Bay in 1779. He and his crew found it hard to get fresh water there.

Oʻahu has many important and historic sites. Pearl Harbor is a very famous place on the island.

It is home to a large U.S. Navy fleet. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese Navy attacked the harbor. This event brought the United States into World War II. You can visit the USS Arizona Memorial to learn about this.

Another special place is the ʻIolani Palace. It is the only royal palace on American soil.

Today, many people visit Oʻahu for vacation and shopping. The island relies on tourism to help its economy. Visitors love to see beautiful beaches like Waikīkī and Hanauma Bay. They also visit places like Diamond Head and the Bishop Museum. Many famous people come from or visit the island. This includes singers like Bruno Mars and actors like Jason Momoa. Whether you visit the mountains or the sea, there is much to see.
