In music, notes tell us how long to play a sound.

We call this the note value. The shape of the note tells us its length.

A note has a round head. It may also have a stem, which is a straight line. Some fast notes have flags or beams. A beam connects two or more notes together.

Notes come in many sizes. A whole note is long. A half note is shorter. A quarter note is even shorter. Some notes are very tiny. A sixteenth note is quite fast. We can also use a dot to make a note longer. One dot makes a note one and a half times as long.

Music also needs silence. A rest is a symbol for silence. It lasts for the same amount of time as a note.

This helps musicians know when to stop playing. Many names for notes come from Latin. For example, 'longa' means long. 'Minim' means very small. These symbols help people play music together correctly.
