Nostril

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

You have two holes in your nose. These are called nostrils. They let air move in and out. A wall of bone and skin sits in the middle. This wall is called the septum. It keeps the two holes apart. Sometimes the septum is crooked. This can make one hole look larger.

Inside each nostril, there are many tiny hairs. Each side has about 1,000 hairs. These hairs act like filters. They catch dust and pollen. This keeps your body clean.

Birds and mammals have special parts inside. They are called turbinates. These parts warm the air you breathe in. They also take moisture out of the air you breathe out.

Humans have more than just two nostrils. We have two more holes deep inside. These are called posterior nares. They connect the nose to the throat. This helps us breathe better. Some fish use small holes to smell. A hammerhead shark has nostrils far apart. This helps the shark find smells in the water.
