The history of human occupation in Norway began as the massive ice shelf melted. This occurred between 11,000 and 8000 BC. The earliest stone tools date from 9500 to 6000 BC. These were found in Finnmark and Rogaland.

The Viking Age brought significant changes and exploration. Before the 8th century, many small political entities existed. Some estimates suggest there were 20 petty realms in the country. Tradition states that Harald Fairhair unified these realms in 872.

This unification created the first kingdom of Norway. Viking explorers discovered Iceland in the ninth century. They even reached Vinland, which is known today as Newfoundland in Canada. Religious shifts also occurred during this period. Missionary kings like Olaf I Tryggvasson and Olaf II Haraldsson helped introduce Christianity. Olaf Tryggvasson built the first Christian church in Norway at Moster in 995.

Norway's political structure has shifted through many unions. From 1537 to 1814, the country was part of Denmark–Norway. From 1814 to 1905, it was in a personal union with Sweden. The 1814 constitution established Norway as a unitary state with a constitutional monarchy. This system divides power between the parliament, the cabinet, and the judiciary. Today, the country is headed by King Harald V. The Prime Minister is Jonas Gahr Støre, who has served since 2021.
