Scotland is a country that forms part of the United Kingdom. It occupies nearly one-third of the total land area of the United Kingdom. The territory includes the northern portion of the island of Great Britain. It also contains more than 790 adjacent islands. These islands are located mostly within the Hebrides and the Northern Isles archipelagos.
The physical geography of Scotland is divided into three distinct regions. The Highlands are located in the north and north-west. This is a mountainous region and is the most mountainous area in the British Isles. It contains Ben Nevis, which is the highest peak in the British Isles.
Human history in Scotland began during the late Upper Paleolithic period. Hunter-gatherers arrived during the Bølling–Allerød Interstadial warm period. This occurred roughly 14,500 to 14,000 years ago after the ice sheet retreated. Neolithic farmers arrived about 6,000 years ago. They built stone structures because trees were scarce in the Northern and Western Isles.

Roman influence in Scotland was significant but often temporary. The first Roman incursion occurred in 79 AD under Agricola. He defeated a Caledonian army at the Battle of Mons Graupius in 83 AD. The Romans built forts along the Gask Ridge near the Highland line. Later, the Antonine Wall was built in 142 AD. This wall defended the Roman part of Scotland from areas to the north.
By the sixth century, the area was divided into several distinct territories. These included Pictland, the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Northumbria, Brittonic territory, and Dál Riata. Dál Riata helped spread Gaelic language and culture. In the eighth century, Vikings began raiding the coast for land and luxury items. In the ninth century, Kenneth I established a royal dynasty. This marked the beginning of the end for Pictish culture. The kingdom of Alba emerged as a Gaelic-character state. By the end of the tenth century, the Pictish language had become extinct.
Scotland's political status changed through several major historical unions. In 1603, James VI succeeded to the thrones of England and Ireland. This created a personal union of the three kingdoms. On 1 May 1707, Scotland and England combined to form the Kingdom of Great Britain. This act subsumed the Parliament of Scotland into the Parliament of Great Britain.

Today, Scotland maintains a unique national identity through its own systems. It has a distinct legal system and education system. The population was approximately 5.4 million in 2022. Edinburgh serves as the capital city. Glasgow is the largest and most populous city.
