Headquartered in West Falls Church, Virginia, the company designs and manufactures complex systems. These systems are used for aeronautics, defense, space missions, and various other technical purposes. Northrop Grumman is a vital partner to the United States government. It currently ranks as the 5th largest contractor for the U.S. federal government. In 2024, the company received over 2% of all federal spending dedicated to contractors. The company is also highly ranked on the Fortune 500 list of America's largest corporations.

The company operates through several distinct business divisions to manage its vast projects. The Aeronautics Systems division accounted for 29% of the company's 2024 revenues. This division develops strategic bombers like the B-2 Spirit and the upcoming B-21 Raider. The B-21 Raider is forecasted to be ready for combat by 2029. The Defense Systems division produced 19% of the 2024 revenues. This group works on modernizing intercontinental ballistic missile systems, such as the LGM-35 Sentinel. The Mission Systems division contributed 25% of the 2024 revenues by creating radar and sensors. Finally, the Space Systems division accounted for 27% of revenues through satellite and spacecraft development.

Each division uses specialized technology to achieve specific goals in flight and space. The Mission Systems division creates advanced radar and sensors for various aircraft. These include the AN/APG-83 AESA radar, which is an upgrade for the F-16 Fighting Falcon. They also produce the AN/APG-77 AESA radar for the F-22 Raptor. The Space Systems division builds critical hardware for exploring the cosmos. They develop Satcom communications satellites and the Cygnus uncrewed spacecraft. They also provide motors for the NASA Space Launch System. This division even builds satellites for the Norwegian Space Agency.

The history of Northrop Grumman is a story of two separate company lineages. The Grumman Corporation was founded by Leroy R. Grumman in December 1929. It began on Long Island, New York, and later moved to Bethpage. During World War II, Grumman built many U.S. Navy aircraft, such as the F6F Hellcat.

The Northrop Corporation was founded in California in 1939 by Jack Northrop. Northrop was known for making the P-61 Black Widow, the first night fighter.

These two legendary companies merged in 1994 to form the modern Northrop Grumman. This merger was a massive undertaking that cost $2.1 billion.

Since the merger, the company has grown through many strategic acquisitions. In 2001, the company acquired Litton Industries, a major shipbuilder. In 2002, it purchased TRW Inc. to gain new space and laser capabilities. A very significant acquisition occurred in 2017 when Northrop Grumman bought Orbital ATK. This purchase cost $9.2 billion, including $7.8 billion in cash. This deal helped create the Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems division. This division was later reorganized to help strengthen the company's space sector. These acquisitions allowed the company to expand its reach across many scientific fields.

Northrop Grumman has achieved incredible success in high-stakes engineering projects. The company and its partners have won the prestigious Collier Trophy nine times. One major achievement was the development of the James Webb Space Telescope.

This massive telescope was launched in 2021 to study the universe. The project involved a mirror assembly worth $8.7 billion. The company also won a $21.4 billion contract for the B-21 Raider. This contract could eventually grow to a value of $80 billion. Such large numbers show the massive scale of their engineering work.

The work done by Northrop Grumman connects many different scientific and global systems. Their aeronautics and defense products help maintain national security and air defense. Their mission systems, like the MQ-4C Triton, provide essential surveillance capabilities.

In the realm of space, their technology enables communication and deep-space exploration. The James Webb Space Telescope allows scientists to look further into space than ever before. Even their work with NASA's Lunar Gateway helps prepare for future human travel. From the atmosphere to the furthest stars, their technology plays a role in how we navigate our world and the universe.
