Norodom Sihanouk was a central figure in the history of modern Cambodia.

Throughout his long life, he held many different positions of power. He served as King, Chief of State, and Prime Minister. Because of his deep influence, many people called him "Samdech Euv," which means "King Father." His life spanned many different types of government regimes. Cambodia moved from French colonial rule to an independent kingdom, and later through various military and communist governments.

Sihanouk’s path to leadership began with his royal family. He was the only child of Prince Norodom Suramarit and Princess Sisowath Kossamak.

Due to advice from a Royal Court Astrologer, his parents placed him under the care of his grandmother, Pat, to protect his health. He received his education in Phnom Penh and later at a boarding school in Saigon. In 1941, his grandfather, King Monivong, died. The French Governor-General, Jean Decoux, chose Sihanouk to succeed him. Sihanouk was formally crowned on May 3, 1941.

During World War II, Japan occupied Cambodia starting in August 1941. Under Japanese pressure, Sihanouk proclaimed independence and became Prime Minister while remaining King. After Japan surrendered in 1945, the French returned to the region. Sihanouk worked to negotiate more autonomy for his country. He traveled to France to meet with the French government. He also visited Canada and the United States to present his case for freedom. In 1953, France agreed to cede control over several ministries. On November 9, 1953, Sihanouk officially declared Cambodia's independence from France.

In 1955, Sihanouk made a major political move. He abdicated the throne to his father, Norodom Suramarit. He did this to become an "ordinary citizen" and participate directly in politics. He formed a political organization called the Sangkum. This group won the general elections in 1955, making Sihanouk the Prime Minister. He governed under one-party rule and suppressed political dissent. After his father died in 1960, Sihanouk became the Chief of State. He tried to remain officially neutral in foreign relations, though he was often closer to the communist bloc.

Political instability led to a major shift in 1970 when a coup ousted him. Sihanouk fled to China and North Korea to form a government-in-exile. During the Cambodian Civil War, he supported the Khmer Rouge to fight the new government. He briefly returned to Cambodia as a figurehead after the Khmer Rouge victory in 1975. However, his relationship with the Khmer Rouge leaders soured quickly. He resigned in 1976 and was placed under house arrest. This lasted until Vietnamese forces overthrew the Khmer Rouge regime in 1979.

Sihanouk spent much of the 1980s working to restore his country's stability. He lived in exile and formed a resistance party called FUNCINPEC in 1981. In 1982, he became president of the Coalition Government of Democratic Kampuchea. This was a broad coalition of different groups fighting against Vietnamese influence. Because of this role, he remained Cambodia's internationally recognized head of state at the United Nations. In 1990, he served as president of the Supreme National Council of Cambodia. This body oversaw the country during a period of transition.

Peace arrived through the 1991 Paris Peace Accords. The United Nations established the UN Transitional Authority in Cambodia, known as UNTAC. In 1993, UNTAC organized general elections. This resulted in a new coalition government led by Sihanouk's son, Norodom Ranariddh, and Hun Sen.

Sihanouk was reinstated as the King of Cambodia. He held this position until he abdicated again in 2004. He chose his son, Norodom Sihamoni, to be his successor. Sihanouk passed away in Beijing in 2012.

Beyond politics, Sihanouk was a very active creative person. Between 1941 and 2006, he produced and directed 50 films. He also acted in some of these movies, even though they were often described as low quality. His films and many of his songs often focused on nationalism. He wrote songs about his wife, Monique, and about communist leaders who helped him. He even held concerts for diplomats in New York City during the 1980s. His life remains a complex part of how modern Cambodia was shaped.
