He led a movement known as the Khmer Rouge. This group turned Cambodia into a one-party state called Democratic Kampuchea. Pol Pot is remembered as one of the most brutal leaders in modern history. His government oversaw the Cambodian genocide. This period caused the deaths of an estimated 1.5 to 2 million people. That number was about one-quarter of the entire population at the time.

His family was prosperous and owned rice land and cattle. His father was a successful farmer who hired neighbors for labor. Sâr received an elite education in Cambodia. He attended several prestigious schools, including the Lycée Sisowath. After failing to continue academic studies, he studied carpentry at the Ecole Technique. In 1949, he won a scholarship to study in Paris, France.

While living in Paris, Sâr became involved in radical political ideas. He studied radio electronics at the École française de radioélectricité. During this time, he joined the French Communist Party. He also participated in the Cercle Marxiste, which was a secret group. This group used a clandestine cell system to discuss Marxist texts. Sâr helped produce a newspaper called Reaksmei, which means "The Spark." These experiences shaped his belief in Maoist and Marxist-Leninist ideologies.

Sâr returned to Cambodia in 1953 and became part of the Marxist-Leninist movement. He worked as a teacher in Phnom Penh for a time. By 1959, he helped form the Kampuchean Labour Party. This group later became the Communist Party of Kampuchea (CPK).

After a coup in 1970, the Khmer Rouge forces advanced. Aided by North Vietnamese troops, they controlled all of Cambodia by 1975.

Upon taking power, Pol Pot implemented a radical plan called "Year Zero." He believed all old cultures and traditions must be destroyed. He wanted to build a new agrarian socialist society from scratch. To achieve this, the Khmer Rouge emptied the cities.

They forced urban populations into rural labor camps. Citizens were forced to work on collective farms. The government abolished money, religion, and private property. Everyone was forced to wear the same black clothing.

Life under the regime was defined by extreme hardship and violence. The administration oversaw mass executions, torture, and widespread disease. Many people died from malnutrition and abuse in the labor camps. The government used sites like the Tuol Sleng school for prisoners.

These actions were part of a systematic genocide against the Cambodian people.

In December 1978, Vietnam invaded Cambodia to remove the Khmer Rouge from power. Vietnamese forces occupied most of the country within two weeks. This ended the genocide and established a new government. The Khmer Rouge retreated to the rural jungles near the Thai border. They continued to fight and raid for several years. Pol Pot eventually stepped back from leadership as his health declined. In 1998, he was placed under house arrest by a Khmer Rouge commander. He died shortly after his arrest.
