History was very difficult for the royal family. In 1975, the Khmer Rouge took control of Cambodia. They began a period of great harm called a genocide. Sihamoni was forced to return to Cambodia in 1976. His family was placed under house arrest in the Royal Palace. They lived in fear and had very little food. They mostly ate rice and fish twice a week. They had to grow their own food in the palace gardens. In 1979, the family was moved to China for safety.
After leaving Cambodia, Sihamoni lived in France for nearly 20 years. He worked as a professor of classical dance. He taught at several places like the Marius Petipa Conservatory. He also started a dance group called Ballet Deva. He worked hard to help men find roles in traditional Khmer dance. In 1992, he became a representative to the United Nations. Later, he served at UNESCO in Paris. He worked to protect Khmer ballet and shadow theatre.
Sihamoni became King on October 14, 2004. A special group called the Royal Council of the Throne chose him. This happened after his father, King Sihanouk, decided to step down. Sihamoni wanted his coronation to be a simple event. He did not want to spend too much money. He did not wear the heavy gold crown during the ceremony. He promised to be a king for all his people. He often visits people living in the countryside.

His formal coronation took place on October 29, 2004, at the Royal Palace. He requested that the ceremony be modest and simple. He did not want the country to spend too much money on lavish celebrations. Because of this, he did not wear the traditional gold-and-diamond crown.
